Biography

Robin Miskolcze teaches courses in American Romanticism, American Realism and Naturalism, 19th-Century American women writers and early American culture. She is currently Director of the English Graduate Program. Her book Women and Children First: 19th-Century Sea Narratives and American Identity (2008) examines images of women at sea as passengers, cross-dressed sailors and slaves within antebellum narratives ranging from novels and sermons to newspaper accounts and lithographs. Professor Miskolcze has also published her research in journals such as Nineteenth-Century Contexts and Leviathan: A Journal of Melville Studies. Her current research interests include 19th-century representations of homelessness, Mobility Studies, and Oceanic Studies.
